 Das Weingut ist ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt von Aubert de Villaine, Mit-Inhaber der Domaine Romanée-Conti und dem amerikanischen Cousin seiner Frau Pamela, Larry Hyde. Mit all der Erfahrung und dem Fachwissen der beiden großen Weinpersönlichkeiten wurde für „HdV“ eine Boutique Winery vor den Toren von Napa errichtet, die ganz nach französischem Vorbild auf handwerkliche Sorgfalt, detailgenaues Arbeiten sowie schonende Vinifikation ausgerichtet ist und in der der junge französische Weinmacher Stéphane Vivier die Vorstellungen von Aubert de Villaine umsetzt. Die nun erhältlichen aktuellen Abfüllungen stellen einen neuen Höhepunkt dar.

Im Februar besuchte Aubert de Villaine seinen Neffen Charles Fairbanks auf dem gemeinsamen Weingut der Familien Hyde und de Villaine im Napa Valley und verkostete die neuen Jahrgänge. Als der 2009er Chardonnay ins Glas kam und Aubert de Villaine den ersten Schluck nahm, zeigte sich auf seinem Gesicht „eine Regung, die ich in meinen sieben Jahren bei Hyde & de Villaine noch nie zuvor gesehen hatte und die sich nur schwer in Worte fassen lässt“, so Charles Fairbanks, der Managing Director des Weinguts. Offensichtlich war der burgundische Doyen hochzufrieden, mit dem was er da verkostete, denn er schrieb daraufhin:

“Recently, I was at our HdV (Hyde and de Villaine) winery and I tasted our soon to be released 2009 Chardonnay. It struck me as to how successful this wine is in regards to our initial goals established over a decade ago. One of these goals was to harvest a Chardonnay that would express the character of the place it comes from: Carneros (and more particularly Hyde Vineyard), but where one could also find the minerality that is so dear to our Burgundian palates. Carneros terroir is gifted, thanks to the soil and to the strong winds from the Bay, with a minerality that is rarely found in other American wine regions. Our 2009 Chardonnay shows opulence and a fruit forwardness, but beautifully translates the mineral background that gives it its defining character.”

2009 Chardonnay
„The 2009 Hyde & de Villaine Chardonnay highlights why Hyde Vineyard is the elite Chardonnay site in California. A wine that is rich and complex while exuding finesse and elegance. Intense aromas of fresh fig and stone fruit develop over time in the glass. The complexity relies on an intricate evolution of spice, apricot and pear notes that leads to a persistent finish. Reminiscent of Grand Cru Burgundy, this wine will age gracefully for two decades.“

2007 Belle Cousine
„Old World in style, the 2007 Belle Cousine is comprised of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. There are spice and dense fruit characters on display with a velvety tannin texture. This wine is true to the Napa Valley and Hyde Vineyard with its alluring backbone of opulent black berry and graphite notes. The Cabernet-Sauvignon spice provides a long finish culminating to an intriguing, complex wine.
Our 2007 Belle Cousine will effortlessly age for 15 years and will need decanting prior to serving earlier in its life.“

2007 Californio Syrah
„The nose emanates a vibrant mix of sweet spice and fresh black fruit lifted by an elegant touch of oak. There is a fresh intensity accompanied by black cherry as well as a unique earthy character reminiscent of old world Syrah. Layers of fruit and spice add focus and definition to a wine full of energy. Deep and concentrated, this wine coats your palate and lingers with a fresh finish.
Our 2007 Californio Syrah will age elegantly for 12 years but it will also please at the table in its early age.“
